Founded in the early 1940s as a neighborhood bar on San Pablo Avenue in Albany, the Ivy Room evolved into one of the East Bay's most rewarding small music venues under the stewardship of Dottie MacBeath and her son Bill, who booked blues, rockabilly, and swing acts in the 1990s. Today the women-owned, all-inclusive venue holds just under 200 and programs an eclectic mix of roots, country, jazz, rock, hip-hop, and punk from local and touring artists. The room has become a special home for the LGBTQ+ community and draws a diverse audience from across the Bay Area. Its small scale and unpretentious atmosphere make it a favorite for artists and fans who value connection over production.
