The Howlin' Wolf was founded in 1988 by brothers Jack and Jeff Groetsch in the Fat City section of Metairie, named after legendary bluesman Chester Burnett. The club moved to a cotton warehouse at 828 S. Peters Street in the Warehouse District around 1990 before relocating to its current 10,000-square-foot home at 907 S. Peters after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The main room holds 1,200 for concerts, while the adjoining Den offers a 120-capacity space for more intimate shows. A Michalopoulos mural wraps the exterior with New Orleans neighborhood scenes, and inside, the bar is carved from mahogany salvaged from Al Capone's former Lexington Hotel. Under current owner Howie Kaplan, the Wolf books a broad slate of touring rock, funk, hip-hop, and jam bands alongside local acts.
