Saturn Bar has anchored the corner of St. Claude Avenue and Clouet Street in the Bywater since 1960, when O'Neil Broyard took over the space and named it after the nearby Michoud aerospace facility in New Orleans East. For decades, Broyard filled every surface with dust-coated trinkets, girlie photos, trophies, and oddities, creating one of the city's most photographed interiors -- parts of the Ray Charles biopic and The Pelican Brief were filmed inside. After Broyard's death during the Katrina diaspora in 2005 and years of uncertainty, new owners reopened the bar in October 2021, preserving its eccentric character while adding a back room for live music. The stage now hosts local bands, touring alt-rock acts, poetry readings, karaoke nights, and DJ sets in a space that remains a genuine Bywater institution.
