Tipitina's was born on January 14, 1977, when a group of 14 Tulane alumni and students -- the "Fabulous Fourteen" -- pooled their money to buy a club at 501 Napoleon Avenue where New Orleans piano legend Professor Longhair could perform. The venue took its name from Longhair's signature song, and he played there regularly until his death in 1980. Housed in a 1912 building that previously served as a gambling house, gymnasium, and brothel, the low-ceilinged Uptown room has since hosted virtually every major New Orleans act alongside national touring artists across funk, R&B, rock, jazz, and zydeco. The Tipitina's Foundation extends the venue's mission by providing instruments and uniforms to local high school marching bands. The banana in the logo is the last remnant of the original juice bar, a quirky reminder of the venue's idealistic origins as a community gathering place built around one musician's genius.
