Fox Theater Oakland

The Fox Oakland Theatre opened on October 27, 1928, as a 3,200-seat movie palace, dazzling 20,000 opening-day visitors with its Mighty Wurlitzer organ and ornate Moorish-Byzantine interior. After closing in 1966 and narrowly escaping demolition in 1975, the theater sat vacant for over four decades before a $75 million restoration returned it to life on February 5, 2009. The refurbished room holds up to 2,800 with a state-of-the-art Meyer sound system, and has hosted Bob Dylan, Radiohead, Green Day, Metallica, Paul Simon, and Lorde. Its reopening catalyzed the revival of the Uptown district along Telegraph Avenue.
