Born out of a series of house concerts called the Second Saturday Salon, The Sound Room opened its first brick-and-mortar location on Broadway in Oakland in 2012 as a dedicated listening room. The current space at 3022 Broadway seats roughly 100, with nearly every chair within arm's reach of the performers. That enforced intimacy is the point: the room operates on a strict listening-room etiquette that prioritizes the music over bar chatter. Programming leans toward jazz, singer-songwriters, world music, and acoustic acts who thrive in a quiet, attentive setting.
