August Hall occupies the former Native Sons building, a Victorian playhouse from the 1890s that hosted the West Coast premiere of Hitchcock's Vertigo. The main room features 32-foot ceilings and ornate period architecture, with capacity around 950 for standing shows. The venue opened in its current form in 2017 under Goldenvoice/AEG management, with a focus on mid-sized touring acts and special events. The booking spans rock, indie, hip-hop, and electronic music. The room's historic character provides an unusual backdrop for contemporary performances. There's a balcony with limited seating and bar areas on multiple levels. The downtown location near Union Square provides good transit access. For shows too large for club venues but too intimate for arenas, August Hall fills the gap with style.
