A former mortuary transformed into one of San Francisco's most striking music venues, The Chapel opened in 2012 at 777 Valencia Street. The main performance space retains the building's original 1914 architecture, including a soaring 40-foot arched ceiling that gives the room remarkable acoustics and visual drama. The space holds about 500 people across the main floor and mezzanine, with sightlines that work from almost anywhere. The attached restaurant serves craft cocktails and a full menu, and there's a patio out back for catching your breath between sets. California Home and Design named it one of the ten most beautiful venues in the state. The booking leans toward indie rock, folk, and Americana, with occasional forays into jazz and experimental music. Staff swear the building is haunted. Either way, it's a memorable place to see a show.
