The Great American Music Hall has been presenting live music in the Tenderloin since 1972, but the building itself dates to 1907, when it opened as Blanco's shortly after the earthquake. The interior is genuinely stunning: marble columns, ornate balconies, frescoed ceilings, and crystal chandeliers create a baroque grandeur that feels transported from another era. Sally Rand performed her famous fan dances here in the 1930s. Robin Williams filmed his first HBO special on this stage. Jerry Garcia recorded live albums in this room. The 470-capacity hall books everything from rock and folk to jazz and comedy, with an emphasis on acts that benefit from the room's excellent acoustics. There are tables up front for seated viewing and standing room in the back. It's one of the oldest independent venues in the country, and one of the most beautiful anywhere.
