Founded in 1973 by performance artist and activist David Nadel, Ashkenaz is a 300-capacity music and dance community center on San Pablo Avenue in Berkeley, designated a city landmark in 1993. Most concerts begin with a dance lesson matched to the evening's genre, which can range from Cajun and zydeco to Afrobeat, salsa, klezmer, reggae, and hip-hop. A nonprofit since 1997, the venue features a stage, dance studio, and a cafe serving beer, wine, and vegetarian food. Ashkenaz occupies a unique niche in the Bay Area music scene as a space where world music and participatory dance come together in a community-centered, all-ages setting.
