Founded in 1968 by Nancy Owens in an 87-seat former furniture store on San Pablo Avenue, the Freight and Salvage is one of America's oldest continuously operating folk music venues. The nonprofit coffeehouse moved to a 220-seat room on Addison Street in 1988 before opening its current 440-seat home in Berkeley's Downtown Arts District in 2009. Programming has expanded well beyond its bluegrass and folk roots to embrace global roots music, Americana, jazz, Celtic, and world traditions, while maintaining a strong commitment to music education and community engagement. The Freight's warm acoustics and dedicated seated-listening format have made it a rite of passage for acoustic musicians touring the West Coast.
