Originally opened in 1917 as a 1,466-seat movie house, the UC Theatre on University Avenue in Berkeley became locally famous for its 22-year run of Rocky Horror Picture Show midnight screenings before closing in 2001. The nonprofit Berkeley Music Group reopened it in April 2016 after a $6 million renovation that converted the space into a 1,400-capacity standing-room concert venue with configurable seating for 600 to 900. Now officially the UC Theatre Taube Family Music Hall, it books national touring acts across indie rock, electronic, hip-hop, jam, and folk genres. The combination of historic character, modern sound infrastructure, and mid-sized capacity has made it one of the East Bay's most important live music rooms.
