The Spotted Cat Music Club opened in late 2000 at 623 Frenchmen Street in a space that previously housed the Frenchmen Oyster House. The narrow, standing-room barroom struggled for customers at first on a block already packed with clubs, but a relentless commitment to quality live music -- jazz, swing, klezmer, Balkan, and more -- eventually made it one of the most in-demand rooms on the strip. After a renovation that expanded the floor space by thirty percent and added "Music Club" to the name, the Cat became an international destination for traditional and hot jazz, with bands performing just inches from the audience in the cramped, electric space. There is no cover charge and no table service -- just a tip bucket, a bar, and a dance floor where the crowd two-steps to some of the best live jazz in New Orleans.
